The Top 3 Reasons Why I Whole30
Chances are, if you know about my blog you've heard about the Whole30...but chances are also that you aren't quite sure how you feel about it.
I'm not here to convince you of anything--other than that you and only you truly know what's right for your body (I just teach you how to listen :))--but I want to share why I love the Whole30, do it semi frequently, and what is has given me in my l life. Not to overwhelm you with flowers hearts and unicorns, I'll hit you with my top 3:
1. IT'S SIMPLE.
Many people are confused about the "strictness" of the rules. Why no corn? Why no beans? Why no stevia?
There are a few reasons. The first is that the more "other stuff" you cut out, the more room there is on your plate for the heroes (aka vegetables). Very few of us eat enough vegetables, and one of the things I love the most about Whole30 is its ability to get more vegetables into your body, simply by the fact that, well, there aren't that many other categories you can eat. But there are LOTS and LOTS of vegetables out there, and one of the reasons I love doing the Whole30 in each season is to give myself the opportunity to focus on eating the simple, seasonal, local foods that are grown around here! (Lucky bastards on the west coast have a lot more to choose from year round but wtvr not bitter we have actual seasons.)
- In the fall, chicories, parsnips, the beginnings of squash all lightly sautéed and sprinkled with sea salt and a dash of vinegar...
- In the winter, a simple roasted sweet potato with ghee, garlic powder, and cashew butter can make me look like the heart-eyed emoji real quick.
- In the spring, fresh greens with radishes, bacon (or turkey bacon) a shallot, mustard-y vinaigrette and a poached egg is epic.
- In the summer--don't get me started. The summer rocks my world. Just, all the things. Melons, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, torn mint, drizzle of olive oil...
Another reason why the simplicity (or rigidity, depending on how you look at it) is helpful, is that it gives your brain a much needed rest. We make decisions all day long, even when we're not aware of it. Cutting down on your will power (which is not an infinite resource, btw, heard of Mark Zuckerberg's wardrobe...) helps you stick with the Whole30 and not even be tempted by that popcorn (which probably has butter or sugar) hummus (which you'll want to eat with pita) or other not technically "unhealthy" but also not the most anti-inflammatory food that you may be tempted to have. In other words, it cuts out the "should I/shouldn't I" that we usually experience with food.
Does that make sense? Call me if not and we'll have a one on one.
(This honestly should be number one because of how epic and life changing it is.)
About 2-3 weeks into my Whole30, depending on how wonky my system was before I start, I get what they like to call "Tiger Blood".
This is the feeling where you wake up in the morning feeling like you've already had an espresso, or matcha, or chai latte', whatever floats your boat.
Picture this: It's 7am. You wake up, and your body is running so efficiently, your digestion is choo-chooing along the way it was always meant to, you've had a deep, restful sleep, and you have all this unlocked energy that you feel, well, awesome. You feel like you hit the "return to factory settings" button on your body and this is the way life is supposed to be all the time. What more could you ask for?
This one's big.
3. FOOD BECOMES FOOD.
You know that feeling of anxiety you get around food, whether it's that you won't have enough, that you NEED it right now, that if you're feeling stressed or tired or sad food becomes this THING that you get all these feelings about...well, that all calms down.
When you remove all the addictions you don't even realize you have (and btw, you will realize when someone tries to take away your (circle one) dairy/gluten/sugar/for 30 days and you freak the F out, but don't worry, I'll hold your hand), your body can recalibrate to relax around food, and it just becomes...food.
I noticed this when about 2.5 weeks into my last Whole30 I got back from the gym and went to make myself a date and almond butter snack (open up a date, take out the pit, fill with almond butter, enjoy). I took a bite of the date and started reading an article on my phone. Then I went to shower and came back to the kitchen to make lunch, and there was the date, one small bite taken out of it. I thought about how before Whole30 I don't know if I could ever leave a date unfinished...especially not the FIRST one. But now, a date was just, a date. It was there, I could have it, I could have a bite or the whole thing. It wasn't emotional, it was...chill.
Food becomes chill. In the best way possible.
